Born
Ryan Chase, Buggy’s initial introduction to music was at age 7, when his uncle
gave him a mini radio and microphone. With that musical seed planted, his
admiration of music, in particular reggae and dancehall grew and flourished. He
enjoyed listening to artistes such as “Yellow Man” “The Mighty Diamonds” and
“Shabba Ranks” who were the dominant dancehall artists of the day. Clearly
musically gifted, Buggy was encouraged by his peers at school to pursue his
talent and seek a career as an entertainer. Buggy obliged and in 1990 he began
his journey to follow his dream career in entertainment.
In 1997 Buggy began working with a young talented producer called KB Sharp and
quickly became an official member of the “G Sharp Crew”, a group of talented
young people with varied Caribbean styles. Buggy and KB proceeded to produce
material such as the call and respond anthem “Wave” and the hit single that made
a mark for Buggy - “Nubian Girl”. In 2004 he and KB Sharp along with a young
guitarist Blade, formed “Baytown Crew” and produced their first fourteen track
album which featured seven tracks by Buggy including his featured hit single.
This resulted in Buggy touring the UK and leaving an indelible mark where ever
he performed. Buggy and KB Sharp have since partnered and created Hit Island
Studios, pioneering many of the musical fusions that have become common place in
Barbados today. With the Hit Island team supporting him, Buggy quickly evolved
and with his own distinct vocal style, carefully created several hit
reggae/dancehall and ragga soca singles. At the 2008 Barbados Music Awards, Hit
Island Studios was the recipient of the Award for Best Non-Soca Compilation
which features Buggy’s hit song “Bajan Story”.
Today, Buggy’s road to success is clearly defined and stamped with his catch
phrases “Fully Loaded” and “Skiddly Deng”. As testimony to his achievements,
Buggy has toured over 50 cities in the US, Canada, the UK and the Caribbean and
has opened shows for mega stars like Ja Rule, Ashanti, Sean Paul, Beenie Man,
Bounty Killa, Shaggy, Jah Cure, Cocoa Tea, Buju Banton, and Anthony B. His most
recent accomplishment is the pride of his career thus far, as he was awarded
“Reggae Artiste of the Year” and “Best Reggae Single” at the 2007 Barbados Music
Awards Ceremony. After completing a few phenomenal collaborations with Sizzla,
Buggy is currently working on his solo album “Nhakente”, through which he is
about to expose to the world another facet of Buggy – Nhakente.
A humble, focused and talented individual, there is no doubt that this young
songwriter/vocalist, who is a blend of rich Caribbean roots and artistic talent,
is attracting great opportunities that have him destined for greater musical
success. Fully loaded with universal lyrics, energy and charisma, plus a unique
ability to musically connect with people of all walks of life, this South
Central Artiste is well on his way to fulfilling his goal of spreading love in
all forms to the world through his music.
